Spread Awarness with #KnowYourRights campaign

There have been cases of sexual violence being reported daily and children who are few months till aged women who are 90+ have been victims to this serious crime which is a big issue. The cases that are reported are so heart wrenching but over and above there are cases that go unreported as people fear to approach the police as they themselves get blamed for the crime or the officers refuse to write an FIR. The Knowyourrights initiative explains the rights of all individuals who are victims of sexual violence and what they need to do to report these cases. It's a great campaign that helps females to come forward and report these matters as hiding their pain would only increase it and help the criminals.

Females can go through these incidents within their houses as well and many get affected emotionally due to such incidents. In these cases, they need a friend of family member to help them in reporting these matters.

It would improve the security:

There have been many steps taken by the Government and Police due to the rise of these cases and by reporting them, it would help to increase the security and take the necessary steps so that these crimes can be reduced. When rape cases are revealed and if they happen in buses, trains and other vehicles, the Government does make changes that improves the security system so that women can travel safely. There are women constables also who are appointed. Thus, reporting these cases can make this place safer for women in general and also reduce the crime.

Reasons for these crimes can be known:

Sometimes when these crimes are committed, the victim fails to know the reason due to which she was attacked so brutally and by reporting these cases, the reasons would help in getting to know why did it happen. There were cases where a girl fell asleep in the cab and another girl trusted unknown people. These cases were reported and hence everyone got to know that sexual violence can happen anywhere and some mistakes lead to this which we should avoid and protect ourselves from it. Thus, reporting these crimes does help the people in general.

Save a life:

When people are aware of these sexual violence incidents, they can think over it and take the necessary actions as well. For example, when children are victims of such crimes, parents can protect their own children by checking the environment where their child studies, checking the background of the bus drivers who reach their kids to school and also the teachers who teach their kids. This makes them be more alert and protect their kids from such crimes. Hence, when one person comes forward and reports her case, it saves the life of others too. We have had cases when criminals who escaped in one case go and repeat the same crime with others. This needs to be stopped and hence if the first person doesn't report the case, she is indirectly helping the criminal to commit another crime.

Being a mother of a grown up daughter, this topic is always raised in my mind as I put my place in the victim's and her family's position to think if I would be able to raise my voice against the crime and criminal and report such incidents. Initially, thoughts like my daughter's name would be public and people would criticize her for the same and the criminal may or may not get punished then what would happen to my family. These thoughts exist in most of those family's minds and hence they fear from reporting these incidents. While thinking about the incidents, I noticed that by not reporting these incidents, we are actually favoring the crime and criminal which needs to stop and people should come forward and speak against these crimes. The reasons which I want to state are:

We need to change the society's views:

Our society has always been male dominant and have supported the male irrespective if he is right or wrong and have blamed the girl for her misfortune. However, in today's world, the people have tried to consider the girl's view and feel for her and hence if these incidents are reported, the society would try to relate with the girl and take strict actions against eve teasers. If these incidents go unnoticed, it would just lead to a rise in such crimes.

People will take steps to protect themselves:

People need to know that such incidents can take place with them as well as nobody is safe even in their house. They will need to change their views towards the victim and punish such criminals at an earlier stage so that these incidents aren't repeated.

More incidents will be reported:

If more cases of sexual violence are reported, it will give courage to those who have been quite and they will come forward and report their cases too. It needs just one person to come forward and the rest feel more confident and seek justice from the law. It serves as an example for those who fear that they would fall in trouble if they report such matters and for those people, the law should be firm and encourage the women to speak for their right. They should know that are treated equally in society and are no way responsible for the crime. Reporting these cases would only help others and themselves and would let the word spread that women cannot be underestimated and the people who feel women are weak would be punished no matter of their status, religion or power.
