First day in the court #MyInternTheory

I first started working in a law firm before my final results were out. My company employed me just based on my earlier results and fortunately the company was just besides my house. It took me barely 15 minutes travel time while most of my friends were placed in the suburban areas which used to take them 2-3 hours to travel back and forth. I considered myself lucky at that time but I knew that it wouldn't be an easy job as I had worked before in an office but never had experience with legal cases. It was the first time and I was quite nervous too.

First day in the court:

I remember this day till now as that day it was the first ever time I entered the court. My legs were shivering as I walked in and I could see police men and criminals with hand cuffs walked in and out of the court room. I had prepared myself for this day and my boss too had made me prepare all the necessary documents that would be required.

As the judge entered the courtroom, we all stood up and greeted him and he then ordered everyone to take our seat. I just kept looking at him and shaking my legs in nervousness. My boss got up and then the hearing started. It was a criminal case where a man was caught for theft and my boss was the defence lawyer. He asked me for the papers and I quickly passed the same so that he could submit papers to prove the person innocent. He kept presenting proofs that made the judge agree with him and release the person who was charged for theft. I was so happy to see that my boss won the case and this was a great experience to witness what I would need to do when I become a lawyer. I saw the client thank my boss and my boss turned to me and congratulated me too for helping him in the case.

I feel that it is always a first time when we start working and it's necessary that we have a proper mentor and I was lucky in this case. My boss was the perfect person who could help me to while I was an intern and I kept watching him fight cases, I used to gain more knowledge. I had made notes of all the facts that would be useful when I finally would start fighting my cases and these notes came handy to me when I actually started working as a Lawyer.

I’m sharing my first internship experience for the #MyInternTheory activity at BlogAdda in association with Intern Theory.

Law Student #MyInternTheory

I was a student of Government Law College, Mumbai. Attendance was compulsory but the atmosphere was calm. We were a group of friends and we used to attend lectures regularly and during breaks, we used to go to the canteen. After college, we used to go out to a nearby cafe and hangout with friends. The cafeteria was just opposite the college and was crowded with all students who used to sit there and bunk lectures. We used to also plan our study schedule while chatting and this group study helped us a lot before our internship began. We used to read books in the library and follow regular cases from time to time depending on what topic we have chosen and then argue on different points as well. This was like our pre-internship phase where we actually started learning about the real world and getting to know the complexity of our job.

Before I actually joined a law firm, I was asked to take up mock cases and they were cases dealing with strong topics like molestation cases, robbery, half-murder cases and this was because I had chosen Criminal Law and had an interest as the same. The papers that were sent to me as reference were actual legal cases and I had to read the points given as a defense and had to make a note of it. Each case was different from the other and I had to thoroughly study these cases before joining the firm. It was a part of my internship program as well and these all studies would help me in my job as well. It was a very tough thing to do as many cases were such which were still on hold and incomplete. Every month, the firm made me submit my thesis and I used to get nervous to do so as sometimes my study also was incomplete. They used to review my work and have a discussion about the points I did not understand. My employer was quite cooperative and hence it was easier for me to understand my mistakes and the cases as well.

I can say that internship is not as easy as it sounds but it is a phase of our life where  we can afford to make mistake as it's a learning phase of ours. It's a training that we get before we actual enter the professional world and hence for every student, the internship program may be for 3-6 months depending on how fast we learn.
